Sermon Notes for July 22, 2020
Letter to the Church of Thyatira
Rev. 2:18-29
"Write this letter to the angel of the church in Thyatira. This is the message from the Son of God, whose eyes are like flames of fire, whose feet are like polished bronze: (Rev 2:18 NLT)
"I know all the things you do. I have seen your love, your faith, your service, and your patient endurance. And I can see your constant improvement in all these things. (Rev 2:19 NLT)
"But I have this complaint against you. You are permitting that woman--that Jezebel who calls herself a prophet--to lead my servants astray. She teaches them to commit sexual sin and to eat food offered to idols. (Rev 2:20 NLT)
I gave her time to repent, but she does not want to turn away from her immorality. (Rev 2:21 NLT)
"Therefore, I will throw her on a bed of suffering, and those who commit adultery with her will suffer greatly unless they repent and turn away from her evil deeds. (Rev 2:22 NLT)
I will strike her children dead. Then all the churches will know that I am the one who searches out the thoughts and intentions of every person. And I will give to each of you whatever you deserve. (Rev 2:23 NLT)
"But I also have a message for the rest of you in Thyatira who have not followed this false teaching ('deeper truths,' as they call them--depths of Satan, actually). I will ask nothing more of you (Rev 2:24 NLT)
except that you hold tightly to what you have until I come. (Rev 2:25 NLT)
To all who are victorious, who obey me to the very end, To them I will give authority over all the nations. (Rev 2:26 NLT)
They will rule the nations with an iron rod and smash them like clay pots. (Rev 2:27 NLT)
They will have the same authority I received from my Father, and I will also give them the morning star! (Rev 2:28 NLT)
"Anyone with ears to hear must listen to the Spirit and understand what he is saying to the churches. (Rev 2:29 NLT)
Jesus commends the church in Thyatira in five areas:
1) L_________________
We know how much God loves us, and we have put our trust in his love. God is love, and all who live in love live in God, and God lives in them. (1Jo 4:16 NLT)
2) F_________________
Faith is the confidence that what we hope for will actually happen; it gives us assurance about things we cannot see. (Heb 11:1 NLT)
3) S_________________
Pure and genuine religion in the sight of God the Father means caring for orphans and widows in their distress and refusing to let the world corrupt you. (Jas 1:27 NLT)
4) P_________________. E____________________
For examples of patience in suffering, dear brothers and sisters, look at the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord.We give great honor to those who endure under suffering. For instance, you know about Job, a man of great endurance. You can see how the Lord was kind to him at the end, for the Lord is full of tenderness and mercy. (Jas 5:10-11 NLT)
5) C_________________. I____________________
But now you are free from the power of sin and have become slaves of God. Now you do those things that lead to holiness and result in eternal life. For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord. (Rom 6:20-23 NLT)
Jesus offers Jezebel and her followers the opportunity to R____________.
If the person still refuses to listen, take your case to the church. Then if he or she won't accept the church's decision, treat that person as a pagan or a corrupt tax collector. (Mat 18:17 NLT)
If they refuse, they will suffer God's W____________.
Therefore, they must eat the bitter fruit of living their own way, choking on their own schemes. (Pro 1:31 NLT)
Jesus asks the Church in Thyatira to H____________ T_______________.
except that you hold tightly to what you have until I come. (Rev 2:25 NLT)
